Zepos Restaurant, Chania Crete
Since the establishment of our Crete taverna in 1961, when the vast majority of our customers consisted of fishermen and workers from the local area, many alterations have been made regarding the menu, facilities, and ownership.
Some things, however, have remained unchanged.

Scenes around Crete in 1961 (Part 2/2)
In 1961, a boat load of Cretans who lived in the U.S. converged upon New York City and took the Queen Frederika to Crete. There, they visited many sites in their motherland.
Anthony Sooklaris brilliantly shot and edited this very interesting video of the life and times of that event, but also a glimpse at what life was like in Crete in 1961.
School girls wear uniformed dresses, and boys wear their school caps which resemble military officer's caps, but actually are standard issue for school boys.
Please leave me a comment and let me know how your life may relate to this video.
Furthermore, if you have any information of the scenes that we are seeing, please share it in a comment. Some of the towns and villages are documented in the form of signs, but let me know if you see and recognize landmarks, villages, people, etc. This is amazing video that begs to know more!
From Teiher: This is the part of your visit to Lassithi. At first you show us St. George Selinari, then I saw the central square in Neapolis and the the lake of Aghios Nikolaos with the small bridge. After that, I see some windmills that used to pump water on the Oropedio Lassithiou and then the entrance of the Gouverniotissa monastery as you were on your way back to Heraklion.

From 2:20 to 4:38, the scene is in Rethymno. The banner with the inscription ΚΑΛΩΣ ΗΛΘΑΤΕ is erected at Kountorioutou Street and we can also see the Municipal Garden of the city, where the official launch is taking place.
From 4:46 to 9:25, the scenes are from Hiraklion. You can see Liontaria Square. (5:12), Eleftherias sq. (6:11), the Prefecture (6:00) and Agios Minas church (8:50) which is the Metropolitan Church of Heraklion.
Enjoy!

Knossos Crete in 1961
Anthony Sooklaris so masterfully captured this, then, recently opened historic site, the Minoan Palace, at Knossos, Crete, Greece.
The Pancretans of America conducted an excursion to Crete, and this video documents that trip.
If you notice anything that you recognize, people, sites, etc., please send a comment and let us know how this video relates to your life and experience.

Xordaki, Akrotiri Greece 1961 (Silent)
The Tsouchlarakis family are from in Chordaki XOPODAKI KPHTH. What a scene to see how these poor but incredibly happy people lived in the very early 1960's.
If you know any of these people, please leave comments and tell us stories about these amazing people from this small village in Crete.
Enjoy!
Shot by Anthony Sooklaris in 1961.

Chania Scenes, Agora, and Limani 1961
The life and times of this very beautiful town, now become a city. The movie starts off in the afternoon in Crete when all of the shops are closed. Notice the cars....mostly American. There are some 3-wheeler vehicles as well. You'll see a white Fiat...that was our car. Donkeys and horses are as prevalent on the roads as cars.
The ol' gas stations are a hoot! This movie has some great scenes around the Agora, Xania's most prominent shopping center. There are some driving scenes which meander their way through the city.
Some of the street scenes don't show very many people. Those clips were likely shot in the mid afternoon when many people are taking their afternoon nap.
If you recognize certain landmarks or scenes or people, please leave a comment and share with us your reflections or memories about this time.
This video was shot and edited by Anthony Sooklaris, Antonis Tsouchlarakis, in 1961.
Enjoy

Dancing in the Cretan Streets 1961
This film is a bit choppy. It starts off in Xordaki, Akrotiri, Crete. Next, I think it jumps to Paidoxori, Apokorona, Crete, and then back to Akrotiri, Sternes, where there is dancing in Kosta and Eleni Verganelakis' house. Possibly for Stavro's Baptism, but I cannot be sure.
Antoni Panagirakis, the xorofilaka (police man), is a crafty dancer, who was one of the most passionate and loving people I've ever known, god rest his soul. You'll also catch Helen Sooklaris and Maria dancing in this feature film.
Notice the woman lyradzida, or rather, violistra (violinist), not very typical at that time. People are definitely dancing in the streets for these village celebrations. It is typical of the Cretan Kefi that needs no formal venue to occur.
Shot and Edited by Anthony Sooklaris (Tsouchlarakis) in 1961.
Enjoy!
